Welcome to Calhoun Middle School

Opened in 1924, Calhoun Middle School was originally named Denton Junior High School until 1968, during which time the mascot was the Colts. In 1969, the school was renamed Congress Junior High School, and the mascot changed to the Cougars.

In 1982, the school was renamed Calhoun Middle School in honor of A.O. “Prof” Calhoun, who served as principal of Denton High School for 33 years until his retirement in 1957. For nearly a century, Calhoun was located on Congress Street, serving generations of students.

In August 2024, Calhoun Middle School relocated to its new, modernized campus on Crescent Street, the site of the old Denton High School. With this historic move, Calhoun also returned to its original mascot, the Colts, reconnecting with its deep-rooted history.

As an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, Calhoun plays a critical role in Denton ISD’s IB Continuum, preparing students with an inquiry-based education that fosters global-mindedness, critical thinking, and academic excellence. Calhoun is proud to serve students in the Denton High School attendance zone, continuing its legacy of excellence within the district.
